Second top Army officer to be killed in Mi-17 crash is Gen Rawat

New Delhi, Dec 8, 2008 : India’s first Chief Of Defence Staff, General Bipin (63), was killed along with his wife and 11 other victims when their IAF Mi-17 crashed into Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.
This was the first death of a top defense official in almost three decades.

It also shares curious similarities with the previous incident.

In 1993, a senior Indian Army officer died in a helicopter accident.

This incident also involved a Mi-17 helicopter, bad weather, and the officer was accompanied by his wife.

Lt Gen Jamel Mahmood was the Eastern Command chief and died in a helicopter accident in May 1993 while on a visit in Sikkim.

His wife, Col M.N., Military Assistant.Ahmed, Lt Lakshman Tiagi, orderly NaikG.Thyagarajan and his personal bodyguard Havildar S.Vasudevan were all also killed.

Mahmood was commissioned into the Artillery in 1959.He commanded a Sikkim platoon during the 1962 India–China war and was awarded the Yudh Seva Medal.

He also saw action during the 1965 and 1971 India-Pakistan war, held a series of key command (including of a brigade, infantry division, and the Srinagar-headquartered Chinar Corps), staff and instructional posts, including at the IMA, and the Army War College.

In October 1992, he was appointed Eastern Command chief.

Three decades ago, the Indian Army Air Force and Air Force lost a number of senior officers when an IAF Alouette helicopter crashed near Poonch in noiembrie 1963.

Lt Gen Daulat Singh is the Western Command chief.

Air Vice Marshal Erlicpinto is the Western Air Command chief.Chinar Corps Commander is Lt Gen Bikram Singh.25 Infantry Division chief Maj Gen N.K.D.Nanavati, Brigadier S.R., 93 Brigade chief.Oberoi and Flight Lt S.S.Sodhi were also killed in the crash.

The Indian Army was blessed with the miraculous survival of all the passengers of the IAF de Havilland Devon transport plane crash near Lucknow in Feb 1952.

On board were future Army chiefs – Lt Gen S.M.Shrinagesh, and Major Gen K.S.Thimayya — and Major Gen S.P.P.Thorat, the Eastern Command chief, Maj Gen Sardanand Singh Chopra, Major Gen Mohinder Singh Chopra, and Brig Ajaib Singh.

Brig Singh was so large that Lt Gen Shrinagesh’s ADC had no choice but to leave his seat.K.Sundarji would become the Indian Army’s chief in his turn.
