By Biswa Bhushan Mahapatra Bhubaneswar : , Nov 29, 2018: Four Indian officials have been appointed by the International Hockey Federation (FIH), in various capacities, for the FIH Odisha Hockey World Cup 2023, Bhubaneswar – Rourkela.Monday was the day that the FIH made its announcement.

Sonia Bathla (technical officer), Col (Dr.) Bibhu Nayak Raghu Prasad and Javed Shaikh are the officials.

Gyanendro Nigombam President of Hockey India, congratulated the Indian officials for their appointment and stated, “It is a matter great pride for Hockey India that the Indian officials will represent India in the marquee tournament 2023.” All four of you my best wishes for your endeavors.”

Sonia Bathla, a woman official from India, will be the only one to be appointed by the FIH as technical official for the prestigious quadrennial tourney.Bathla, who is a member of Delhi Hockey and began her career in 2010, said she is proud to have been appointed by the FIH as the technical official for the quadrennial tournament.

“I look forward doing my best in this prestigious event.It is amazing that Hockey India has promoted women officials throughout these years and has given us many opportunities to learn and master international standards through their regular workshops and clinics,” said Bathla.

Bibhu Kalyan, an expert in sports traumatology, and sports & exercise physiology who was previously the chair of FIH Safety and Health Committee by the FIH Executive Board, expressed his delight at being appointed as the Medical Officer for this prestigious event.

“This will be my second stint as the medical officer at a World Cup in India.

I am proud to have been given this opportunity again and I know it is a great responsibility.Nayak stated that she is confident that she will fulfill the role.

Javed Shaikh, an umpire who officiated at this year’s Tokyo Olympic Games, said that he was pleased to hear the news.He also expressed pride in being a part of the tournament in India.

As players prepare for the tournament, so will my job as umpire.I need to work hard on my fitness and speed in order to be my best.

Shaikh has been an umpire at major events like the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, as well as the 2014 Men’s World Cup (Hague, The Netherlands) over the past decade.He was also called up to be an Umpire for the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2020 Olympics.

Bengaluru-born Umpire Raghuprasad expressed his excitement at being appointed.He stated, “It’s a great honor for me to once more be a member of the Umpire Panel for another World Cup event.” I will continue to work hard.”

“I have experience officiating at Tokyo Games.”I am happy that I will have the opportunity to officiate in World Cup matches again in Odisha,” said the umpire.

Prasad has been an umpire at major events like the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and three World Cups over the past 16 years.
