A man of Cambodian origin in America made history.

A man who came to America as a refugee after escaping the brutal rule of the Khmer Rouge is now receiving the reins as mayor of the superpower.

He thus became the first person of Cambodian descent to receive this accolade.Sokhari Chau, a city councilor in Lowell, Massachusetts, was unanimously elected mayor on Monday.

Sokhari also made history as the first person of Asian descent to serve as mayor to Lowell in this order."I was once a refugee.

Im now the mayor of the main city in Massachusetts," Sokhari said during the swearing-in ceremony.He is currently working in the US Social Security Administration.

The city of Lowell on the Merrimack River, near the state border with New Hampshire, is home to the American textile industry.It is in this order that European and Latin American immigrants have been attracted for generations.

The city currently has a population of over 1,15,000.About 25 percent of them are of Asian and Cambodian descent.

During the swearing-in ceremony, Chou described how his father, a captain in the Cambodian army during the 1975 civil war, was hanged by Communist leader Khmer Rouge.He said his mother had saved seven children for four years despite the catastrophic situation.

Chou recalled that landmines, forests, hunger, sickness, and uncertainties brought them to America.He revealed that at first we hid in collaboration with the Catholic Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Chou said he later immigrated to Lowell in the mid-1980s.Chou said he worked with his brothers-in-law in factories here.
