Ex-TN Minister’s son convicted of hijacking truck carrying Rs 1.2 cr cashew nuts

Chennai, Nov 28, : After stealing a truck containing 16.5 tonnes cashew nuts, Tamil Nadus Tuticorin port police arrested Gnanaraj, 38, and six accomplices.

They were attempting to export the cashew nuts to TokyoGnanaraj Jebasingh, the son of S.T.Chellapandian, ex-Minister for Labour in Jayalalithaa Cabinet (2011-2016).Police stated that a truck carrying 16.5 tons of cashew nuts, worth Rs 1.2 crore, was being transported from Killiyur district to Tuticorin port for shipment to Tokyo.According to police, the gang had been following the truck from Kanniyakumari.

When it reached Deivaseyalapuram the gang intercepted it and took Hari at knife-point.Later, the gang drove off with cashew-laden truck.

The vehicles owner discovered that his consignment had been stolen and filed a complaint at the Puduckottai station.The Tuticorin police, led by ASP Chandeesh, chased the vehicle and found Hari abandoned along the way.Police changed the trucks nameplate and discovered that an orange-coloured MUV had been following the truck since it left Vasavapuram check point.The police team identified the MUV number and traced its owners mobile phone.

They arrested Gebasingh at Namakkal, an eatery on Saturday morning.ASP spoke to media and stated that Gebasingh claimed they were innocent, but later admitted to the crime.
