Brussels, Nov 27, : When the mandatory approval system for Covid-19 vaccine exports expires at year’s end, the European Commission stated that it would not be renewed. This means that vaccine producers won’t have to apply for authorisation to export vaccines to the EU.
The export authorization mechanism will be replaced by a “new monitoring system” that will provide the Commission with timely, company specific, vaccine export data.
According to Xinhua news agency, the Commission stated that Friday’s decision was part of an EU effort to ensure rapid production and equitable distribution of Covid-19 vaccines, which the world urgently requires.
The Commission stated that “the EU is the largest global provider of Covid-19 vaccinations, with more than 1.3 billion doses exported so to date, more than half its production.” “The EU will also donate at most 500 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines to the most fragile countries in the coming months.”
The 27-nation bloc has vaccinated 68% of its population of 445,000,000 and has plenty of stocks for booster campaigns.Several member states have already begun such campaigns.
“With new outbreaks in the EU of the virus and the risk of new Covid-19 variants, there is still an urgent need for transparency in vaccine exports.
The EU will continue to do so under the new monitoring mechanism,” said the Commission.
