Frontline fighting against rebel forces will be led by Ethiopia’s PM

Addis Ababa : , Nov 23, 2003 – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmad announced that he would lead the frontline fight against rebel forces from Tuesday amid an intensifying conflict in northern Ethiopia.
According to Xinhua, Ahmed called for “all patriotic Ethiopians to support him” in frontline fighting against Tigray People’s Liberation Front forces (TPLF), according to Xinhua news agency.

“The moment calls for the martyrdom of our nation.Ahmed addressed the nation, stating that he would march on the battlefield to help our defense forces.

In a social media statement, he stated that “all of you who want to be among Ethiopia’s most beloved children, stand up and support your country” in a late Monday tweet.

Conflict between the Tigray-based forces of the TPLF (endorsed by the Ethiopian National Defense Forces) and the TPLF erupted last November.

It has since spread to neighbouring Amhara, Afar and other regions.

In the last months, the forces loyal to rebel group TPLF moved southwards into the central part of East Africa.

The massive popular mobilization that followed was in Amhara and Afar, as well as in other regions of the country, to resist the TPLF expansion.

The Ethiopian House of People’s Representatives (HoPR), earlier this month, ratified a 6-month emergency rule to stop the advance of the rebel group and ensure security and peace in the country.
