Los Angeles, Nov 26, : A producer from ‘Rust’ is backing another independent film, titled ‘Sam & Kate’.It stars Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spak and is expected to begin production in the early part of next year. Ryan Smith is financing the film.Filming will begin in Thomasville, Georgia in mid-February.
According to variety.com, a source close to Smith will contribute a portion of the financing.He will also get an executive producer credit.However, Smith and his company won’t be involved in physical production.
Two lawsuits have been filed against Smith and Allen Cheney, Smith’s business partner, and Thomasville Pictures.
They are alleged to be responsible for the fatal shooting at the set of ‘Rust,’ last month in New Mexico.
Alec Baldwin was filming a scene and shot and killed Halyna Hutchins, a cinematographer.He also injured the film’s director.The film was canceled indefinitely.
Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation into how live bullets got onto set.Hannah Gutierrez Reed (24-year-old armorer) and Dave Halls (first assistant director), have been the focus of the investigation.Halls admitted that he didn’t properly check the Colt.45 revolver before he handed it to Baldwin.
The lawsuits claim that the production made a mistake and hired inexperienced crew members.This led to dangerous conditions on set.Sheriff Adan Mendoza has also cited “complacency at set” as a factor.
Thomasville Pictures was among several production companies involved in the project.
Thomasville’s former crew members have also made allegations of unsafe practices and alleged that they were not paid on time.
Cheney is a native to Thomasville, a small city in southwest Georgia that has a population of approximately 19,000 people.
His company has brought several low budget productions to the city over the years, including “Supercell”, which also stars Baldwin; “Bandit”, which stars Mel Gibson; “The Tiger Rising”, with Dennis Quaid, Queen Latifah;” and “One Way”, with Travis Fimmel, Machine Gun Kelly.
None of these films have been released yet.
In June, ‘Sam & Kate” was announced ahead of the Cannes Film Festival.Hoffman and Jake Hoffman are expected to play the roles of father and son.Spacek and Schuyler Fisk will play the role of mother and daughter.
Darren Le Gallo wrote and is now set to direct.
Amy Adams, his wife, is one of the executive producers.Representatives of Adams and Le Gallo did not respond to requests for comment.
Thomasville Pictures’ representative did not comment.
Volition Media Partners is producing.
Bankside Films handles foreign sales, and Endeavor Content handles domestic financing.Volition Media Partners was also credited for ‘Supercell’.
Ford Corbett, one of the film’s co-executive producer, is also credited for ‘Sam & Kate.
Bonnie Hayes is the tourism and film manager for Thomasville.
She said that the producers had first discussed filming ‘Sam & Kate” in the city but have yet to submit a permit application.
She said, “We haven’t had a problem avec them.”
