Los Angeles, December 8, 2008 : Drake has withheld his Grammy Award nominations for “Certified lover boy”. The hit record was previously nominated to the Best Rap Album gong.’Way 2 Sexy” was nominated to the Best Rap Performance accolade.However, Variety reports that Drake and his management have withdrawn both nominations.
After previously criticising The Weeknd’s organisers for failing to nominate him for any awards for ‘After Hours,’ Drake made the decision.
He stated at the time that he did not believe that the distinction between impactful music, awards, and nominations was a good idea.
Instead, he suggested that we should accept the fact that what once was the highest level of recognition may not matter to artists who exist now or those that follow.
Drake, one of the most popular artists in the world, also addressed the controversy via his Instagram account.
Drake, multiple Grammy winner, wrote on the photo-sharing site: “It’s almost like a family member you keep expecting to fix up, but they just can’t change their ways.” @theweeknd was, according to me, a lock for either song or album of the year.But it never works out that way.(sic)”
He also said that he compared award shows with professional sports, noting that unlike NBA athletes, he competes as an “opinion-based” sport.
The ‘Back to Back” singer said, “I want to let you know that we play in an opinion-based sports, not a factual based sport.” This isn’t the NBA, where at the end the year you are holding a trophy because your team won or you made the right decision.
