New Delhi, Nov 29, : , Monday’s claim by the government that Dissolved Oxygen has improved at 40 locations, while Faecal Coliform has improved at 21 Ganga locations between 2014-2021, was made by the government.
“Under the Namami Gange program, a variety of interventions have been undertaken to clean and revitalize river Ganga and its tributaries.

Multi-sectoral interventions have resulted in improved water quality parameters, viz Dissolved Oxygen (DO), and Fecal Coliform(FC) of 2014 (January to May) and 21 (February to May 2021 (January to May).DO has improved at 40 locations, while FC has improved at 21 on river Ganga,” Minister for Jal Shakti Bishweswar Tdu told the Rajya Sabha Monday.

The Indian government releases funds to the National Mission for Clean Ganga, (NMCG), for the implementation the river Ganga rejuvenation program.The NMCG, in turn, releases funds to the state governments/executing agencies, the minister said, adding, “During the last five financial years (i.e.FY 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19, respectively, and FY 2019-20, 2020-21 and the current financial year, October 31st, the total amount spent was Rs 9,933.43 Crore.”

There are many interventions that can be done to clean and revive the river Ganga.These include solid waste management, waste water treatment, riverfront management (ghats, crematoria development), maintaining continuous flows, rural sanitation, biodiversity conservation, public participation, and urban sanitation.

Since 2015, when Namami Gange was launched, 353 sets of interventions of such diverse nature have been undertaken at a cost of Rs 30,458 million.Of this, 178 have been completed.
