“Covishield found 63% effectiveness in fully vaccinated people during the 2nd surge”

New Delhi, Nov 30, : The Covishield vaccine effectiveness against SARS/CoV-2 infection was 63% in the second wave of vaccinations, according to a studyThe study published in the journal "The Lancet Infectious Diseases" shows that the vaccine effectiveness of complete vaccination against moderate to severe disease was even higher at 81%.

Two doses of vaccine were used to estimate their effectiveness.

This was done using 2,379 confirmed cases and 1,981 healthy people.A multi-institutional team of Indian scientists led by Translational Health Science and Technology Institute, (THSTI), evaluated the real-world effectiveness of Covishield in Indias SARS-CoV-2 epidemic.

It was conducted between April and May 2021.To understand the mechanisms of protection, they also evaluated the neutralising activity and cellular immune reactions against the variants in healthy people who had been vaccinated.

The scientists also found that Spike-specific T cells were protected against both wild-type and delta variants of SARS-CoV-2.This cellular immunity protection could compensate for the waning humoral immunity to the virus variants.

It may also prevent the development of severe disease and hospitalisations, according to the study. The study provides detailed data on real-world vaccine effectiveness as well as the immunological response to vaccination.

This information should be used to guide policy.According to the study, vaccines continue to be effective in protecting against severe diseases and death regardless of their variants.
