Pak Chief Justice: Colonels and majors acting as kings

New Delhi, Nov 26th : , Gulzar Ahmed (CJP), grilled the Defence Secretary on Friday about commercial use of military land.He asked whether structures such as cinemas and wedding halls were constructed for defense purposes, the Dawn reported.
The Chief Justice stated that colonels were acting like kings and that majors and majors were acting as such.

A three-judge bench, headed by the Chief Justice, and consisting of Justices Qazi Mohammad Amin Ahmed & Ijazul Ahsan, was hearing the issue about military lands being used commercially at the Supreme Court’s Karachi Registry.

Ahmed asked Defence Secretary Mian Mohammad Hilal Hussain questions about military activities.

He said, “This land was given you for strategic and defense purposes and yet you have started commercial activities there.”

Ahmed asked, “Were cinemas, wedding halls, and housing societies built to defend against threats?” The report stated.

He also stated that all Askari housing projects were built on cantonment land.

“We have decided that it will not happen again,” said the Defence Secretary, adding that construction of housing societies and commercial uses of military land would be stopped.

Justice Amin then asked Hussain where and how this would be possible.

He was asked by Justice Amin to give a written explanation.

“Go to all the chiefs of the armed forces and tell them that the land intended for defense purposes will not be used for commercial purposes.

Ahmed directed the Defence Secretary to inform all military cantonments that the land would only be used for strategic purposes.

He stated that there were commercial activities at Masroor Base, Faisal Base, and tall buildings were being built there after the signboards were removed.
