Canberra 24 August : China is “exponentially” expanding its warship capabilities and is reported to have re-started mass production of guided missile destroyers local media reported.The Chinese Communist party-controlled newspaper, the Global Times, reported on Tuesday that China will complete its modernization and military expansion before 2035 “including the construction of navy blue-water, to enhance the country’s international standing and better protect the nation’s interests”.
A navy that is blue-water is one that travels through deep oceans and operates worldwide.
Naval News has reported that five types of 052D destroyers capable of launch long-range missiles are being constructed, The Guardian reported.
John Blaxland, professor of international security and intelligence studies at the Australian National University’s strategic and defence studies center He said that the military expansion of China was “deeply alarming”.
“When you consider the capability it is growing exponentially” he said.
“It’s changing from being a brown-water navy specifically designed to provide close protection of China’s shores an authentic blue-water navy.
“They are intended to strengthen China’s influence, which is in line with its growing economy and not only in the South China Sea, not only in the initial island chain [which also includes Taiwanas well], but more widely across the Indo Pacific and the Pacific Ocean.
“It’s expanding the navy to boost its economic strength with force.”
