Indians who have migrated to different countries for occupation, employment and business are willing to give up their Indian citizenship and become citizens as they settle there.

About 522 expatriate Indians from Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh have renounced their Indian citizenship in this regard, according to the Regional Passport Office (RPVO).

Passport offices issue "Surrender Certificates" to applicants who wish to surrender their passports.Those who obtained foreign citizenship on or after June 1, 2010 will have to pay Rs 5,000.Also, foreign nationals by June 1, 2010 have to pay Rs.500.The Passport Center has revealed that the highest number of surrender certificates were issued in 2019 before the corona epidemic erupted.A maximum of 169 surrender certificates were issued that year.

Authorities say 99 surrendered their passports in 2020 despite Kovid restrictions.It said 99 surrender certificates had been issued till December 20 this year.

According to the Passport Center, 90 certificates were issued in 2018 and 70 in 2017.Sibash Kabiraj, a regional passport official, said that most of the people in the area are settling in Canada.According to the Center, 8.81 lakh Indians have renounced their citizenship in the last seven years.This was announced in the current session of Parliament.

According to the State Department, 8,81,254 people have renounced their Indian citizenship in the past seven years.Last month, the Center said that one lakh Indians had renounced their citizenship in the first nine months of this year.

According to Union Minister of State for External Affairs Nithyanand Roy, 1,33,049 people in 2017, 1,34,561 in 2018, 1,44,017 in 2019, 85,248 in 2020 and 1,11,287 as on September 30, 2021 have renounced their Indian citizenship.As many as 1,33,83,718 Indians are living abroad, he said.
