Omicron-affected countries can get vaccines and other assistance from the Centre

New Delhi, Nov 30, : Monday’s offer by the Indian government for ‘Made in India” vaccine supply and other assistance to countries affected by the new Covid variant Omicron’ in Africa was made Monday by the Indian government.
“The Government of India is ready to support countries affected in Africa in dealing the Omicron variant, which includes supplies of ‘Made in India’ vaccines.

The Union Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that supplies can be made through Covax or bilaterally.

The Central government has approved all Covax orders for Covishield vaccines to be delivered to African countries, including Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique and Guinea.

“We have also cleared supplies Covaxin to Botswana.Any new requirement, whether bilaterally or through Covax, will be considered expeditiously,” stated the Ministry in a statement.

It also said that India is ready to supply vital life-saving drugs, test kit kits, gloves and medical equipment, such as ventilators, if required.

Indian institutions would favourably consider cooperation in genomic surveillance and virus characterisation-related research work with their African counterparts.

The Union government has delivered more than 25,000,000 doses of Made in India vaccinations to 41 African countries.This includes nearly one million doses as a grant to 16 countries and more that 16 million doses under Covax to 33 countries.

Omicron, a new Covid variant, was first reported to the World Health Organisation (WHO), from South Africa, on November 24, 2021.
