Ottawa, Nov 29, : According to the Ontario provincial government, two people from Ottawa have tested positive for the highly transmissible Omicron variant Covid-19. They recently traveled to Nigeria with the two of them.
According to a statement by Christine Elliott, Ontario Health Minister and Kieran Moore, Chief Medical Officer of Health on Sunday, “Ottawa Public Health conducts case and contact management and patients are in isolation.”
“The Ontario Covid-19 Genomic Network continues to monitor for all possible variants circulating within the province, including Omicron variant.It is also conducting genomic sequencing on 100% of eligible Covid-19 positive samples.”
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the variant was reported in South Africa on November 24th.The first confirmed case was found in a specimen taken on November 9th, according to Xinhua news agency.
Canada was one of the countries that announced travel restrictions Friday for southern African countries.
Jean-Yves Duclos, Canadian Health Minister, stated in a statement that he had spoken to his provincial counterpart regarding the new cases.
He said, “This development shows that our monitoring system works.”
“As the monitoring continues with provinces, territories, it is possible that other cases will be found in Canada.”
Friday’s announcement by the Canadian government was that it would ban foreigners from entering Canada who have traveled through South Africa, Mozambique and Namibia, Botswana or Lesotho in the past two week.
