Ottawa September 2 : Health Canada has granted approval to an improved version of Moderna Spikevax vaccine, which targets the SARS-CoV-2 virus that was first identified in 2019.It also targets the Omicron (BA.1) variant.According to a press release issued by the FDA on Thursday, the vaccine, referred to as a “bivalent” vaccine is approved for use as an additional dose in those aged 18 years or older.
The first vaccine with bivalent Covid-19 approved in Canada as per the agency, noting that the moderna bivalent booster is both safe and efficient with the same minor adverse reactions that were quickly resolved, Xinhua news agency reported.
The results of a clinical trial showed that the boost dose of the bivalent Moderna Spikevax vaccine triggers a strong immune response to both Omicron (BA.1) and the original strain of SARS-CoV-2 the agency stated.
It was also observed to produce a positive immune response to the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants and could increase the longevity of the protection offered, Health Canada said.
