BJP releases a list of candidates for the municipal elections in Kolkata

Kolkata, Nov 29, : With just two days left for the last date for filing nominations for the upcoming Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections (KMC), the BJP became the last major political party to announce its candidates’ list, following Congress, CPM, and Trinamool Congress.
Samik Bhattacharya, a senior BJP leader and party spokesperson, announced the list for the 144 wards at KMC on Monday evening.

He said that the party has given importance women and youth and also selected advocates, doctors, and teachers to be its candidates.

“About 48 percent of our candidates are under the age of 48.Our candidates include a large number of women.Bhattacharya stated that there are also advocates, doctors, and teachers who have been named candidates after the announcement.

According to the BJP leader the majority of the candidates are former party workers.

The BJP has nominated more than 50 women candidates for the forthcoming elections scheduled for December 19.

The BJP has also changed from its previous strategy of granting nominations to popular personalities and candidates from other political parties.

“We have tried giving nominations to the tried workers — those who have worked hard to develop the party.

A senior BJP leader stated that there is no representation from the television and film industries in the list.

The State Election Commission had issued on Thursday the poll notification for KMC polls.It scheduled the election for December 19.The deadline for submitting nominations is December 1.Voting will begin on December 21.

The civic elections in Howrah were postponed while the matter is pending before Calcutta High Court.

The BJP claims that Trinamool Congress does not want to hold the pending civic elections in a single phase, as it is “scared”.

The state government submitted an affidavit to the high court stating that Kolkata and Howrah were first considered because of the better vaccination coverage in these places.
