By Jagannath Chatterjee New Delhi, Aug 12 : The iconic figure of Indian football, Bhaichung Bhutia, has applauded the Supreme Court’s ruling to grant voting rights to prominent players in the All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) elections and added that it will give players who are often lost in retirement, a chance to make a difference in the development of the sport in the country.
The Apex court in its ruling on 3 August had ordered the inclusion of famous footballers in the AIFF management, and ruled that the general body of the federation should be able to add 36 members (male as well as female) in addition to the state association membership of 36 currently in existence.
The court also ruled that elections must be held in conformity with the National Sports Code and Article 26 of the draft constitution of the AIFF that provides for the establishment of a fixed term and the age limit for office bearers.
“I am happy with the decision of the Supreme Court to grant voting rights to the most eminent athletes in AIFF.
The country we live in is one where players are often forgotten after retirement and are left out of the game yet they have a lot to give.Only a professional can comprehend the suffering of players and understand what they require to succeed.This has helped players to be able to live with dignity in their retirement.” Bhutia said.Bhutia.
Jo Paul Ancheri, another veteran, welcomed the verdict and said “I am extremely happy I am so happy that the Supreme Court has finally given an opportunity to former players who were left out after retirement.
Players will now be able to active in the administration of the sport and continue to support the sport even after retirement.Experience and knowledge of prominent players will now be utilized to the fullest extent.”
“It’s amazing to see that the Supreme Court has given voice to the players in the administration of the sport.It’s a feasible career choice for players who retire and a positive step to ensure the future and welfare of the players” stated Sandesh Jhingan who is currently the player in defense for the Men in Blue.
Former India goalkeeper Sandeep Nandi, Nirmal Chettri, Sanju Pradhan, Anwar Ali, Anas Edathodika, Raman Vijayan, and Subhasish Roy Chowdhury were also happy with the ruling of the Supreme Court, while regretting the fact that the sport has mostly been governed by business and political leaders who aren’t always aware of the spirit of the game.
They also emphasized that the passion of a footballer for the game lasts a lifetime and doesn’t stop with retirement.
The decision will be a lifeline for players who have been a part of their country for a long time.
