Kolkata 30 August : The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned the general secretary for the national level Abhishek Banerjee on the 2nd of September to be questioned on the coal smuggling fraud in West Bengal.Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was requested to be present at the office of the ED in the Central Government Office (CGO) in Kolkata’s Salt Lake area.
ED sources claimed that in the course of interrogation of certain Indian Police Service (IPS) officers in the state, detectives discovered new hyperlinks in the fraud, after which it became imperative to investigate Abhishek Banerjee.
The sources claimed that a specially-constituted group of ED officials from the headquarters of the agency in New Delhi will be traveling to Kolkata to take part in Abhishek Banerjee’s interview.
The team will be comprised of detectives who have interrogated the IPS officers.
An email has already been sent out to the offices of the director of state police general Manoj Malviya and the commissioner of Bidhannagar City Police, Supratim Skar, for the arrangement of the proper security.
Abhishek Banerjee has yet to respond to the summons.
On Tuesday, when giving a speech at the anniversary of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad’s founding day the Chief Minister expressed fear that her nephew could be summoned at any time.
“He has delivered a fiery speech here.Who is to say that he as well as his wife will not get an agency notification from the central office on the horizon.
If they are summoned the couple, I’ll ask them to bring their two-year-old child together with them to the office of the agency,” she added.
In response to the news, Trinamool Congress member Santanu Sen stated that the Chief Minister’s view on this issue was true.
“It is the highest level of political savagery in which the Union government and BJP are blatantly making use of Central agencies” Sen said.
CPI(M) central committee member Sujan Chakraborty, said Sujan Chakraborty said that Mamata Banerjee knows about the inevitable fate of her and her nephew, which is why she expressed her concern.
Senior BJP leader Rahul Sinha has said that the central agency investigation in the matter is being conducted in accordance with the directions of the court and it is ineffective to assign this summons an ideological hue.
