Mumbai, December 31, : .The BCCI has postponed Thursday the Under-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy.
This was due to take place in January 2022.It had been scheduled to start in that month because of recent increases in COVID-19 in India cases and growing threats from the Omicron variant. Jay Shah, secretary of the Indian Cricket Board, wrote to BCCI affiliated clubs that domestic cricket was going well.He said 748 matches had been completed.
However, due to a sudden increase in cases, it has decided to delay its junior tournament.
India has reported 13154 COVID-19 new cases on Thursday.
The number of cases currently active is 82,402.
Shah stated in the letter that he had been monitoring developments in India and around the globe and estimated that caseloads will rise in the near future if they are not managed now.
He said, “After consultations with experts, seeking the views of medical teams, and the operations team, it was decided that the U16 Vijay Merchant Trophy will be postponed in this season, keeping safety and health in mind.”
Shah, 33 years old, also stated that participants still have not been vaccinated.As such they are potentially vulnerable.BCCI isn’t willing to risk its junior cricketers.
He said, “We need to be cautious and not risky and place the well-being of talented cricketers in grave danger.”
In July, the BCCI stated that they were confident all tournaments would be played, even those that are for women and older age groups.
He wrote that “ahead of domestic season, had stated that we would endeavour to have full seasons across all age groups.”
We started well, and have now completed 748 matches.However, we are facing a serious problem.He said that the cases in India have been spiraling and that even though there are many adults who were double vaccinated they still get infected.
It was to take place at four locations in Guwahati and Agartala between January 9-21.
