Turin, Nov 28, : , Australia, the 28-time Davis Cup champions, is in danger of being eliminated despite a 2-1 win over Hungary in Saturday’s Davis Cup Finals. Alex de Minaur, Australia’s number one, was a brave man who worked tirelessly for three hours to win 7-5, 2-6 and 7-6 (7-2) against Marton Fucsovics, his hard-hitting Hungarian counterpart.
The win allowed the experienced John Peers to tie Alex Bolt in the decisive doubles.They proved too strong for Fabian Marozsan and returning Piros, winning 6-3 and 6-7 (11-13), and 6-3 in just under two hours.
It wasn’t enough for Australia to make it to the finals.
John Millman lost to Zsombor piros in Saturday’s first match.
Australia’s Group D campaign ended with a record of 2-4 after losing 3-0 to Croatia in their opening match.Australia is now on the brink, as their record of only two rubbers won and four losses won’t be good enough to get them into the quarterfinals.
Australia’s Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt was disappointed to see his team lose to Hungary, but he said that there were many positives from Saturday’s win over Hungary.
Hewitt admitted they would be flying home, but said he was “extremely proud of their fighting spirit.”
He said, “I think we had a few days to think about it.All our focus was on today’s events and what we could control in the future.”
“We did that by winning, but it won’t be enough to get through.Hewitt said that qualification was always unlikely, but that nobody believed the never-say die de Minaur when he won the marathon.
After securing his first win in the third attempt, de Minaur stated, “You leave everything out there for your country.It was a hard fight.
