By Sumi Khan Dhaka : , Dec 8, 2008 – A day after Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina demanded that Md Murad Hassan be removed from his position as state Minister of Information Broadcasting over an audio leak which went viral online, Hassan offered to resign on Tuesday and apologized to women via his Facebook page.
After making untoward comments against Khaleda Zia, the granddaughter of the former Prime Minister and BNP chief Khaleda Zia, Hassan has been the subject of criticism for the last few days.
On Sunday night, a video clip from a telephone conversation that was recorded by Hassan and featuring Mahiya Mahi being hurled abuses at Mahiya Mahi went viral via social media.
Mohammad Harun Ur-Rashid (Joint Commissioner (North), Detective Branch (DB) at Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said Tuesday that Hassan will be interrogated by the police if someone files a formal case against him.
Rashid stated that he had named Hassan the Detective Branch and other agencies in the leaky conversation.He would then interrogate the matter, if necessary.
According to an official, actor Mamnun Hasan Emon visited the DB Office on Monday Night and talked about the leaks with Hassan.
Rashid stated that DB’s Cybercrime Unit always performs shadow investigations when any information goes viral via social media.
She also said they would talk to Mahiya Mahi after she has returned from Saudi Arabia.
After being called by the elite force, Emon was summoned to Rapid Action Battalion headquarters (RAB), where he was interrogated about the audio conversations.
After a storm of social media over demeaning remarks about women and audio leaks, Hassan quit his post as cabinet member.
He was relieved of his post as Health and Population Affairs Secretary at Jamalpur District Unit of Awami Liga.
After Sheikh Hasina protested strongly against his inappropriate remarks about women, Hassan was forced to step down.
On Tuesday, the minister resigned from his position to serve personal reasons.
Hassan was harshly criticized by many for making disrespectful comments about women during a social media interview.Over the past few days, a number of videos and audios featuring Hassan’s indecent comments went viral via social media.
Recently, a two-year old phone conversation between Hassan and Emon was shared on social media.The audio clip shows Murad making “derogatory remarks” about the actress and threatening her with a sex proposal.
Hassan quickly issued an apology to the public for remarks he made on social media shortly after resigning.
