UN: At Least 20 People Are Killed In An Attack On IDP Site In Congo.

United Nations, Nov 30, : At the least 20 people were killed in a raid at an IDPs site in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), UN humanitarians reported.
According to Xinhua news agency, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said Monday that the Attack near Drodro, Djugu territory, Ituri was the fourth raid targeting largely internally displaced persons in the province since November 19.

OCHA stated that Sunday’s Attack was the latest in a worrying trend of attacks on civilians and humanitarian access.

Due to insecurity and attacks at the sites that house the displaced, thousands cannot access humanitarian assistance.Some UN humanitarian partners have suspended operations.

David McLachlan Karr, UN humanitarian coordinator in DRC, stated that “these attacks are violations of international humanitarian laws and the 2009 Kampala Conventions on IDPs.” They must stop immediately.

In a statement issued in Kinshasa, he stated that he had called on the Congolese authorities to take urgent steps to protect civilians, including the displaced.

Ituri province is home to 1.7 million people displaced by the attacks.There are also reports of population movements, OCHA stated.
