Assam political party chief reprimanded for “trying to create division”

Guwahati : Nov 27, 2017: Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Chief Minister, claimed Saturday that a political party is trying to create division between different communities by triggering controversy on language grounds.

He had been charged with a local organization.Ramandeep Kaur (Cachar Superintendent of Police) confirmed that Datta Roy was taken into custody on Saturday afternoon.

Datta Roy had earlier this week given a 48-hour ultimatum the Cachar Deputy commissioner to remove a government hoarding in Assamese.He threatened to launch a massive agitation to stop him from meeting his demand.

Sarma, without naming the BDF, said that a small-known organization in the Bengali-dominated Barak Valley region had recently defaced government hoardings in Assamese written with black ink.Meanwhile, another organisation gave an ultimatum for the state government to get rid of the hoarding "Bengali-speaking Hindus make up a minority of the Barak Valley.He said that a motivated section was trying to make Bengali Hindus living in Brahmaputra valley vulnerable.

" Sarma stated that if these organizations truly cared about Bengali people, they wouldnt have done such an act because there are many Bengali-speaking people living within the Brahmaputra Valley "Any language-related action in Barak Valley triggers corresponding reactions in Brahmaputra Valley." BJP leaders in Barak valley are trying to find out under whose instructions these individuals are functioning," said the Chief Minister.

He also stated that "it is impossible to erase Assamese from our hearts".However, he referred to Trinamool Congress, which is running a "motivated" campaign, as the party behind the incident.

He stated, "The Congress never indulged with such acts." Datta Roy had stated that Assams Language Act was amended after the 1961 historic language movement that claimed 11 lives in police firing.

This made Bengali the official language for Barak Valley, which includes three districts -- Cachar and Karimganj -- that is home to more than four million people.Protests by different organisations, including the BDF as well as the All Bengali Youth & Students Organisation, were also triggered by the hoarding of the Jal Jivan Mission.

After protests in October, another hoarding of industry department documents in English and Assamese was removed from Karimganj.The All Assam Students Union, an influential organization, had protested the destruction of the hoarding and demanded the arrest of those involved.sc/khz/pg #Assam #reprimanded #create.
