Brisbane, Dec 8, 2008 : Despite England’s slump to 112 runs for six in the second session on Wednesday, Australian great Ian Chappell stated that Joe Root, the visiting skipper, was a “very good batter” but not a captain.England lost the away series to India by three runs in February-March.
This was followed by a 0-1 loss at home to New Zealand in the second-Test series.Root was Root’s captain.
After the World Test Championship final, India won the five-Test series in England. They are currently leading the five Test series 2-1.
Due to the bio-bubble breach at the Indian camp, the fifth and final Test had been postponed.
Chappell stated on Wednesday that he thinks Root is a good batsman, but not a great captain.”He doesn’t have a lot of imagination, and that’s important in Australia.”
Chappell had high expectations of Pat Cummins, the new Australian skipper, who he said would be a “good captain”.Cummins has replaced Tim Paine as captain following the scandal involving a former Cricket Tasmania staffer.Paine decided to take an indefinite rest from the game.
“Pat Cummins is a good captain.I think it will take him some time to get into the position but I think that by the end, I think Pat will have miles ahead of Joe (Root), and if that’s true, Australia will win quite comfortably,” stated Chappell.
Chappell stated that Ben Stokes, England’s all-rounder, will make a better skipper and that he had “lots going for him”.
“I think Stokes would make a great captain.
Although aggressive players are not always good captains, I believe Stokes has a lot to offer.Stokes is a brilliant cricket brain, a great bowler and batsman, and you shouldn’t underestimate his fielding.
He would make a great captain, and Joe Root would be wise to listen to him,” Chappell stated.
