By Sumanta Ray Chaudhuri Kolkata 28 August : For the past one and a half months West Bengal has been grabbing national attention due to of the ongoing actions of the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate on various scams such as the West Bengal School Service Commission irregularities in recruitment and cattle trafficking.
The political situation in the state has turned extremely heated due to these developments and the state’s ruling Trinamool Congress in a counter-attack is focusing on the leader of the Opposition in the Assembly instead of the BJP leadership in the state.
Be it the administration’s initiative to block Suvendu Adhikari from participating in any anti-state-government event or reiterating his demands for his detention in the Narada video scam, the main goal of the Trinamool Congress is to go all-out against Adhikari politically and administratively.
Suvendu Adhikari comes up with his own way to justify the Trinamool Congress’s attack on Suvendu Adhikari.”Actually the chief minister Mamata Banerjee was not able to accept loss by an amount of 1,956 votes against me in Nandigram in the 2021 West Bengal elections.Since the beginning of her third term she as well as her party has made me the victim.
But I’m not afraid and will continue to do my duties as an accountable leader of the Opposition against this corrupt government of the state,” he said.
Senior Trinamool Congress MLA Tapas Roy However, he has slammed the theory of Adhikari.”Everyone knows that Suvendu’s win in Nandigram was the result of fraud, benefiting of the power cut in the final round of counting. Our question is what is the reason the central agencies remain in a stalemate about Suvendu even though he was identified in the first FIR lodged by the CBI in the Narada video case, where he accepted cash in the video.
We object to the prejudicial approach of central agencies that represent of the BJP and Suvendu is adding spice to the plot,” he said.
Political analyst Arundhati Mukherjee, to a certain extent was in agreement with Adhikari.”It is very possible the chief minister was hard to accept that she was defeated in Nandigram and consequently was forced to be elected in an election by-election in Bhawanipur to keep her seat as chief minister. However, that isn’t the only or the primary reason for this heightened attack against Suvendu Adhikari.
My view is that the primary reason is in the aggressive way in the way that Adhikari uses his Chief of Opposition position to lead political attacks on the ruling party, which is not the case with his predecessors. This has led the Trinamool Congress to focus the attack against him, rather than the state-based unit of the BJP in general,” she said.
According to her the report, since Mamata Banerjee took over as the chief minister in 2011 she has faced three leaders of Opposition in the state assembly.”In the first year of her term, which ran from 2011 to the year 2016, the Leader of the Opposition was a veteran CPI(M) leader Suryakanta Mishra, renowned for his outstanding legislative debate ability with occasionally making use of an aristocratic humor. But, he lacked that aggressive punch to stop the yelling horde of the Treasury benches. The second time she was elected,, which ran from 2016 to 2021 the leader of the Opposition was the Congress’s Abdul Mannan.
But, his entire time was spent in managing the internal affairs in the state Congress and halting the departure of high-ranking leaders of the party. As a result, he was unable to concentrate on his duties as the leader of the Opposition.
In this situation Suvendu Adhikari with his aggressive style of leadership has come as a shock to the chief minister and the Trinamool Congress,” she declared.
A different political analyst Amal Kumar Mukhopadhyay stated that one of the reasons why the ruling party targeted its attacks on Suvendu Adhikari is because of the pressure he puts on the Union government and the central leadership of the BJP to keep the state government and the Trinamool Congress under pressure.
“Let us forget about the current central agency investigations which are mainly the result of the directives of the Calcutta High Court. What Suvendu Adhikari was able to accomplish in convincing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the Union home minister Amit Shah was the huge irregularities in the use of central funds in various centrally-sponsored schemes.
It was due to of Adhikari’s persistence that Union government stopped paying West Bengal unless the latter presented the utilization certificates and accounts of previous expenses under such schemes. This is the principal reason behind why Adhikari has become the primary antagonist of the Trinamool Congress leadership rather than the state unit of the BJP,” he said.
He said that in 1998 the year 1998, when Mamata Banerjee resigned from the Congress and launched the idea of an All India Trinamool Congress, her main complaint to the state Congress leaders was that they refused to convince the Congress-led Union government to maintain the pressure on the Left Front government in West Bengal.
“In actual fact, the concept of using the term Bengal Congress leaders as watermelons that are green inside and red on the outside, was the idea of Mamata Banerjee herself.
Then Suvendu Adhikari has done the same thing, which has convinced the Union government to continue the pressures on the Trinamool Congress and the state government. This is why he has targeted his attack on him.” he said.
