The Guntur Municipal Corporation has decided to curb food wastage in hotels, restaurants and in function halls in the city.On the initiative of Mayor Shivanaga Manohar Naidu, the government has set up YSR food banks at six locations in the Guntur.
AP state government advisor Sajjala Ramakrishnareddy will officially inaugurate these food banks today in Guntur.
These food banks have a capacity of one thousand litres and these have been set up in specially constructed sheds in the congested areas of the city such as railway station, bus stand, GGH, Gandhi Park and surrounding areas.
The state government made freezers available in these banks to store the food in these banks.Later, the food will be supplied to the needy.
The fridges here have separate racks for veg and non-veg food.
Officials hired staff in two shifts to manage these banks.
They collect food from donors and store it on racks.The municipality is taking steps to spread the word about these food banks.
This policy is currently being implemented in Greater Hyderabad.
Along with food, the food banks also has special racks for old clothes.Donors can donate their old clothes, too.
