According to the complainant, the Anti-conversion Bill was tabbed by the ruling BJP and has cast a poor image of people from the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribe communities.

The complainant said that the Anti-conversion Bill had shown these people as beggars and vagabonds. It also portrayed them as those who convert to other religions through the use of money, cloth and donations.

This complaint seeks action against the backdrop of portraying certain communities in a bad light in Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Bill, which was recently introduced in the Assembly session.

All BJP MLAs greeted the bill in the House when it was introduced by Araga Jnaendra the state Home Minister.

In his complaint, the complainant requested that the Karnataka Chief minister Basavaraj Bhommai and other officials be investigated.

According to the 1989 Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Prevention of Atrocities Act, the complainant requested registration of his case.

On December 23, the controversial Anti-conversion Bill passed the Assembly by voice vote during the just concluded Belagavi winter session. It has yet to be introduced in council.

Madhu Swamy, Law Minister has indicated that the government can get the Bill approved by the council at the next legislative session in January/February 2022.If the session is delayed, there will still be the possibility of the ordinance being promulgated.

If the Bill isn’t rejected by either of the Houses, the government may promulgate the ordinance. It must, however, get approval from the legislature in the next session following promulgating an ordinance.

The Congress announced in the meantime that they would take all necessary measures to repeal the Bill, even after the ordinance was promulgated. It also said that the party would immediately repeal the Bill if it is in power.
