New Delhi, Dec 8, 2008 : Many senior military officials were killed in an Indian Air Force helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu’s Coonoor Wednesday afternoon.The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Bipin Rawat, his spouse and 12 others were onboard.
This latest incident brings back many prominent people who have died in air crashes in the past.Subhas Chandra Bose, a freedom fighter from Taiwan, was one of the first victims.

However, there has been controversy about his death.

Another air accident occurred when a helicopter carrying Andhra Pradesh Chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy crashed.

The YSR helicopter crashed in a forest as it flew in a Bell 430 to Chitoor in Andhra Pradesh.His body was found 27 hours after the helicopter disappeared in 2009.

Sanjay Gandhi (the younger son of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi) was killed when the glider he was piloting crashed at the Safdarjung Airport in Delhi.

Madhavrao Scindia, a senior Congress leader, was killed in a Cessna plane crash in 2001 as he was travelling to Kanpur to address an assembly.

G M C Balayogi, the Lok Sabha Speaker and leader of Telugu Desam, was also killed in a chopper accident in Andhra Pradesh in 2002.

O P Jindal (Haryana’s former power minister and a leading industrialist) and Surendra Singh, the state agriculture minister, were both killed when the helicopter developed a technical fault and crashed near Saharanpur, in 2005.

Surendra Nath, the Punjab governor, and nine family members were killed when the Super-King aircraft of the government crashed into high mountains during bad weather in Himachal Pradesh in 1994.Nath was also acting governor of Himachal at the time.

Five days after his helicopter went missing, Arunachal Chief minister Dorjee Khandu was found unresponsive near the China border in 2011.
