It has been growing in popularity in Texas and other parts of America over the past few years.Members from a Houston table tennis club spoke to Xinhua this month.
Dylan Nguyen, club owner said that he believes Americans are playing pingpong more than ever before.We currently have 12 tables and we are considering adding eight tables in the second quarter 2022.
Table tennis can be enjoyed at all ages for mental and physical health, says Nguyen.He also noted that Texas Table Tennis Training Center (which he established in 2013) now boasts more than 150 members whose ages span from 5 to 84, according to Xinhua.
Nguyen says that table tennis can be played in the club, even during pandemics, as all the players must have been fully vaccinated.The tables should also meet U.S.CDC guidelines regarding a minimum six foot social distance.
Santiago “Jimbo” Valdez is one of five club coaches.He started table tennis at 41 years old in a bar.He explained to Xinhua that he started too late, and he decided he was too old to be a good coach.
I really love the game.Promoting table tennis is something I enjoy.Watching videos of how to improve table tennis is something I do all the time, but mostly Chinese.Jimbo said, “I watch them often and pass on that knowledge to my students.”
It’s very friendly.It is good for your overall health.It is good for the mind.This is what I said.It’s been a great help to me mentally and physically.It is an amazing game.He said that table tennis is his favorite game.
Jimbo said that table tennis could help people improve their self-discipline.He observed that table tennis players are very disciplined.I’ve taught children to teens and they do better at school.Their parents are more supportive.They learn disciplines more effectively.
Hector Bennet (63), visits the club three times per week with his son, 15 years old.He likes that pingpong is non-contact and safe.
“My health has deteriorated.”I am undergoing chemo, radiation and other stuff.Bennet said that table tennis was something he tried to do whenever he had the chance.
Bennet stated that his son started table tennis as a child and continued to play until he was “electronic”.
He is now trying to get back in the game.
He is keen to get back into table tennis.Bennet said, “I think he’s using table tennis to bond with us.”
Hannah Song, a U.S.junior national player at the age of 14, is interested in table tennis.I feel that table tennis gives me many unexpected things.
She said that people tend to underestimate table tennis and revealed her desire to be a part of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Vicktor Sabonj is a Houston teacher who also serves as assistant principal.
He currently teaches approximately 10 students at the club in his free time.
Sabonj started ping-pong at the age of nine in Novi Sad (Serbia).
He then moved to the United States as a teenager in the 1990s.You can improve your skills from a small child to a 100-year old.
The part-time coach also marvelled at the fact that “if you look in our club here it feels like you’re in the middle of United Nations,” he said.We have people from around the globe, including from China, Vietnam and India to Europe, the Middle East, Europe and Africa.
He said, “Honestly, there is a United Nation.Table tennis is the best glue for everyone.” “Table tennis is the best method to unify people around the globe, I’d say.”
