Protecting the safety of displaced persons on B’deshi Island

Dhaka : , Nov 23, 2003 – The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies announced Tuesday that urgent action was being taken to protect people from cyclones and Covid-19 pandemics on Bhashan Char island in Bangladesh.This is where approximately 18,000 people displaced form Myanmar are currently residing.
The IFRC reports that authorities have moved the residents from Cox’s Bazar camps to Bhashan Char homes, according to Xinhua news agency.

According to the Red Crescent of Bangladesh, it has worked directly with the displaced in order for lifesaving measures to be put into place before the next major cyclone.

These big storms are frequent threats to the region from September through December.

Bhashan Char island is making every effort to improve the living standards and to support those who need to act quickly in case of super cyclones.

Feroz Salah Uddin, Secretary General, Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, said that volunteer teams were trained in first aid and search and rescue as well as managing cyclone shelters.

Our teams helped with Covid-19 vaccines for the older population most at-risk.

They also assisted in keeping everyone safe with access to health care, clean water and food relief.

The IFRC stated that it needs $92 million in order to support the critical humanitarian assistance needed for nearly one million people displaced in Cox’s Bazar Camp and Bhashan Char Islands.

This includes safer shelters, better healthcare and access to clean water, as well as protecting them from climate catastrophes.

Over 1,000 over-55s have been vaccinated by volunteers from Bangladesh Red Crescent in recent weeks.More vaccinations will be done as soon vaccines become available.

Covid-19 vaccines were available for those over 55 years old on the island.More doses will be required for remaining adults.

Everyone on Bhashan Char Island must feel safe.Every effort should be made for Bangladesh to receive a fair amount of Covid-19 vaccinations.Alexander Matheou (Asia Pacific director for the IFRC) said that this is a crucial part in enabling Bangladesh manage such a large population of displaced persons.
