Panaji 23 Nov : , Nearly 5,000 Congress workers will actively participate in the selection process for candidates in 40 Assembly constituencies.This was stated by Girish Chodankar, the state Congress president. At a Panaji press conference, Dinesh Gundu Ro, the official in-charge of Goa for All India Congress Committee said that the party will finalise the candidates for the forthcoming Assembly elections as soon as possible so they have enough time to campaign for their constituencies.
We believe more people should participate in decision-making.
This isn’t like any other party where one individual decides all.Chodankar said that a total of 5,000 people participate in the decision-making process.” Chodankar spoke to reporters in Panaji.
A top official of the state Congress stated that every block in each constituency would allow the party to shortlist candidates.
These lists would then be reviewed by district committees from the opposition party.
The names of the candidates will then be submitted to the Pradesh Election Committee.
Chodankar stated that the names would then be submitted to the screening committee, and finally to the central electoral committee to finalize the process.
He stated that the same process would be used to finalize candidates for all 40 constituencies, which will go to election in February 2019.
Chodankar was asked if forming alliances with like-minded parties could disrupt party’s process for selecting candidates.He replied: “Anything that happens (alliance), later on will be determined by the party, and the high command.This decision will be made later.
Gundu Rao stated that the final criteria for determining the candidates was to be loyal to the party and connect with people in the block.
He also recommended that the candidate have a strong reputation, manage the election effectively and win the election.The combination of all these factors is what makes it work.
Candidates should not be judged on one factor alone.
