Baghdad, Nov 29, : , Five Kurdish security personnel known as Peshmerga were killed by militants from the extremist Islamic State group in northeastern Iraq in an overnight attack, according to a Kurdish security source. Azad al Dalawi, a Peshmerga officer, reported that IS militants attacked a Kurdish security post in the Kolajo region in the northern part Diyala province late Saturday night.
This sparked a fierce clash between both sides that lasted until Sunday morning, Xinhua’s news agency reported.
Al-Dalawi said that the Peshmerga soldiers managed to repel the attackers.
He said that the clash resulted not only in the deaths of five Peshmerga soldiers but also in the wounding of five other Peshmerga officers and the destruction of a military vehicle.
He stated that reinforcements from Kurdish forces arrived on the scene and launched an operation in the area to search for IS militants.
Since the defeat of IS by the Iraqi forces in 2017, security in Iraq has improved.The IS remnants have since melted down into urban centers, deserts, and rugged areas, launching guerilla attacks on civilians and security forces.
