Chennai, 23 Nov : .Four homes in Tamil Nadu’s Salem district were destroyed by heavy rains Tuesday.
Authorities said that the four victims had been trapped under the rubble, and 13 other people have been moved to hospital. Rescue operations are currently taking place in Karungalpatti.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), will likely also reach the area.
For Tuesday and Wednesday, the Regional Centre of the India Meteorological Department issued an alert to Tamil Nadu and for Thursday and Friday.
Alerts were issued due to the possible formation of low pressure or a cyclonic circulatory over the southeast Bay of Bengal, and the surrounding area that extends up to 3.1km above the mean sea level.
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), which has installed pumps to remove excess water from the streets of Chennai, was affected by heavy rains.
GCC officials claim that 794 pumps were deployed.
Many parts of T.Nagar, including GN Chetty Road, Bazulla Road, and North Usman Road are however inundated.
T.Nagar’s flower trader told IANS that he didn’t know the purpose of these official visits.Waterlogging can occur in shops, homes and other places due to heavy rainfall. We have to stop water gushing from our buildings. This is not the GCC’s priority.
According to him, the water from several houses in low-lying T.Nagar is being flushed.
