This was according to Prosper Bazombanza, Burundi Vice President. He spoke at a press conference following a visit.
“We are saddened by the deaths of 38 prisoners, including 12 who succumbed to their injuries and 26 who suffered from deep burns. We have over 1,500 Gitega central prison inmates.

Bazombanza stated that 69 inmates were hurt during the incident, 34 of which were seriously.

According to Xinhua news agency, 35 other prisoners were also slightly injured and received treatment in the prison.

Bazombanza stated that the 34 inmates were admitted to Gitega Regional Hospital, where they were treated by medical staff.

He said, “The source of the fire is the chaotic installations by inmates of electric wires within the prison.”

He used the opportunity to warn Burundians living in communities such as schools, military or police barracks not to make such chaotic installations.

He promised that the entire hospital bill for the injured patients would be paid by the government.

Bazombanza asked the solidarity ministry for food, shelters like tents, mattresses, and other items to be provided to the prison so that inmates can “live in acceptable circumstances”.

He also appealed for the infrastructure ministry’s assistance in identifying the rehabilitation needs of the prison, which currently houses over 1,500 prisoners, but has a maximum capacity of 400.

Gitega prison houses inmates accused of plotting a coup against President Pierre Nkurunziza, who died suddenly on June 8, 2020.

The prison of Gitega caught on fire in August 2021.

However, it was quickly put out before causing any damage.
