33 people killed after 3 storey building collapse in Maharashtra

The death toll in the building collapse which took place in Bhiwandi city of Maharashtra’s Thane on Monday has now increased to 33, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said on Wednesday.All of the deceased have been identified by the Thane Municipal Corporation.

The names include Jhuber Khureshi, Faija Khureshi, Ayesha Khureshi, Siraj Abdul Sheikh, Fatma Jubera, Siraj Ahmed Sheikh among others.

The four-storeyed building in Bhiwandi’s Patel Compound area collapsed around 3.40 am on September 21.Soon after the incident, NDRF, Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF), fire brigade, and police teams had reached the spot and carried out rescue operations.

The President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives in the incident.Two civic officials have been suspended in connection with the collapse and an offence has been registered against the building owner, the official said.

The building in the power loom town – which is around 10 km from Thane – had 40 flats and around 150 persons lived there, the official said.The building, located at Napoli’s Patel Compound near Dhamankar Naka, collapsed while the residents were asleep.
