3-day Cherry Blossom Festival in Shillong

Shillong, Nov 25, : , Conrad K.Sangma, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, and Satoshi Suzuki, the Ambassador of Japan to India, inaugurated the three-day Cherry Blossom Festival at Polo 5th Ground.
The festival, which was cancelled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic in the United States, coincides with the annual blooming of pink cherry blossoms in many parts of the state capital and other parts of the mountainous state.

On the occasion, the first edition of the Shillong Literary Festival, also part of Cherry Blossom Festival was also launched.

Among other events, the festival will host a variety of competitions including singing and dancing, fashion shows and local wine-making.

Suzuki addressed the inaugural function and said he was impressed at the variety of state facades displayed through the festival.

He also mentioned that cherry blossom, or ‘Sakura, is the Japanese national flower, which is also a source for inspiration for the Japanese people.

He said that Meghalaya could attract more tourists, especially from other parts of the globe, because of its unique environment and landscape.

Suzuki also stated that Japan has started the TITP (Technical Intern Training Programme), which will allow international workers to work in Japan for up to five year.

The Japanese envoy stated that India and Japan had signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC).

This framework allows for the operation of the specified skilled worker system (SSW).Under this program, the Japanese government accepts foreign nationals with a certain level of skill and expertise.

The SSW is a status of residence that Japan has created in 2019.It allows skilled Indian nationals to work and live in Japan.

Suzuki stated that Japan is proud to be a close partner with northeast India because of historical ties, trust, and friendship.

Sangma stated that the northeast region has a lot of potential and talent and that it is a good place to start a business.

He said that Meghalaya would celebrate its 50th year of statehood in the early part of next year.A series of events and programmes would be held to allow the youth to show their talents.
