Patna, Nov 30, : At the least 25 people got severe infections in their eyes and lost their sight after undergoing a cataract surgery at a hospital in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur. The incident occurred at the Juran Chapra eye hospital in the city’s Juran Chapra area on November 22.Vinay Kumar Sharma, a Muzaffarpur civil surgeon, confirmed the incident.
“We discovered that 25 people who had cataract surgery were suffering from severe infection in their one eye.Doctors have suggested that the infected eye be removed.To investigate the incident and provide a report, we have formed a three-member committee led by the blindness control officer in-charge of the district.
Sharma stated that it appeared that the doctors at the hospital did not follow the operating protocols.
Sharma stated that he would take strict action against the hospital’s doctors for such serious negligence.
Ram Murti Singh, a Sheohar villager and victim suffering from severe infection in his left eye, stated that the hospital was organizing a mega-eye check up camp on November 22.I was diagnosed with cataracts and went to the hospital.One eye was operated on by the doctors.After four hours, ny eye started paining.
I called the doctors and was given a painkiller tablet as well as an injection.
“The painkiller injection gave temporary relief.
Singh stated that after a few hours, the pain in my eye returned.
Meena Devi, a resident from Mushari in Muzaffarpur, said that she felt great pain in her eye after the operation.
I called the doctors and they gave me a painkiller injection.I was discharged the next day.
“The doctor rebuked my negligence when I went to the hospital on the next day (November 24, 2012).They suggested that the infected eye be removed.
I protested strongly.Meena Devi stated that there was no one in my family who would consent to them proceeding as they did.
Harendra Rajak, a cousin of Ram Murti Sharma, said that nine patients who had contracted severe infections went to Patna for treatment.We were informed by Patna doctors that the severe infection was caused by a wrong operation.
They suggested that the operated eye be removed to avoid further complications in the brain or eye.
