Kolkata, Nov 28, : At least 18 people were killed in a major accident on a state highway in Haskhali, West Bengal, under the Phulbari police station.It happened in the early hours of Sunday morning. According to police, the incident occurred at 3:00 a.m.when a matador with a dead body hit a truck loaded with stone-chips and lost control.”The matador carrying a dead body and at least 30 passengers was heading towards Nabadwip, when it lost control of its vehicle and struck the truck that was standing by the roadside.”We have learned so far that the body was coming to Nabadwip from Bagda in North 24 Parganas District and was going to crematorium,” a senior officer of police said.
Initial reports indicate that 11 people died instantly.
Nine others were rushed to Shaktinagar’s district hospital, where seven more succumbed to their injuries.The officer said that two people were taken to NRS Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata.Their condition is described as critical.
The police were informed by locals who rushed to the scene.
The police arrived and took the injured to the hospital.The officer stated that they had begun an investigation and were not certain if the driver of the matador was still alive.
