Kolkata, Nov 28, : At least 18 people were killed in a major accident on Sunday’s state highway at Haskhali, West Bengal’s Nadia region. According to police, the incident occurred at 3 a.m.when an overcrowded Matador carrying a dead body lost control of his vehicle and struck a truck with stone-chip loaded trucks standing by the side.
“The matador carrying a dead body and at least 30 passengers was heading towards Nabadwip, when it lost control and struck the truck that was standing by the side.”We have learned so far that the body was coming to Nabadwip from Bagda in North 24 Parganas District and was going to crematorium,” a senior officer of police said.
Initial reports indicate that 11 people died instantly.Nine others were rushed to Shaktinagar’s district hospital, where seven more succumbed to their injuries.
The officer said that two people were taken to NRS Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata.Their condition is described as critical.
The police were informed by locals who rushed to the scene.The police arrived and took the injured to the hospital.
The officer stated that they had begun an investigation and were not certain if the driver of the matador was still alive.
Amit Shah, Union Home Minister, and Jagdeep Dhankhar, Governor, condoled the deaths.
Shah posted to Twitter, saying that the road accident in Nadia district of West Bengal was very sad.My condolences go out to the victims of this accident.God bless them in this difficult time.I wish the injured a speedy healing.”
Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar tweeted, “Deeply grieved at the reported death of 18 people in Nadia District and 5 other injuries after the vehicle they were traveling in collided with a truck parked along the side of the road.@MamataOfficial will make every effort to assist the families of the deceased and injured.Promoting Road Safety is a must.
