London 2 September : An estimated number of 173 officers in active service of the London’s Metropolitan Police are under different stages of investigation into allegations of domestic abuse, according to the media. From them, “152 are subject to ongoing criminal or misconduct proceedings and 21 officers are facing an issue to resolve for gross misconduct , and are waiting for an appeal”, Xinhua news agency quoted the Evening Standard newspaper as saying on Thursday.
Certain of the officers being investigated are suspended or placed on restricted tasks while under investigation, however, others will continue working, the newspaper quoted Labour London Assembly member Unmesh Desai as saying.
In the past, in February the paper reported that more than 150 officers had been accused of domestic violence towards their partners or spouses in the past two years with less than 8 per percent of those being charged with an offence.
These figures revealed that “a growing number of police officers are subject to investigations” It noted.
In February, a study from the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) which oversees the complaints system for police in England and Wales has published evidence of discrimination and bullying in the ranks of London’s Metropolitan Police.
“Disgraceful behavior” by officers of the law, which includes harassment, racism, misogyny and the sharing of insulting social media posts were identified in the report.
